Watergate Layout

This is the National Press Photographers Assoc. layout for the Pictures of the Year competition. It's three 16x20 vertical boards taped together. I'm happy I beat those Washington rascals in the lower left photo. They were all photographing Mitchell before the hearing. He turned his back on them, to face this out of town guy standing on a chair.

The Watergate Hearing was on TV all day every day. I lusted to cover it, and finally got there on the first day John Mitchell testified. I caught a moment when Senators Baker, left, and Irvin, center, were most skeptical of what they were hearing.

Shriver

Sargent Shriver was running for Vice President. He talked in front of that statue. Politicians raise their arms. I waited and waited for a match, but no gestures. I was walking in front, headed back for a deadline when he raised his arms, saying “Goodby.” I whipped a shoulder camera up and shot with a wide lens. I got half of downtown, but got the gesture. Notice a young Maria Shriver on the left.

Sad Kid

Reagan security

Ronald Reagan was Governor of California visiting Cincinnati. Everyone but Reagan is security.

Amazing, today they are not obsessed with this photographer. It was another era.

I competed with my dear friend on the other paper. He admitted I won when he saw me on this hill. A cop told me police routinely rescued people from this hill. I had to zip my camera bag and roll it down the hill so

I had both hands to hold onto small branches. (Other days, he won.)

Kissinger

Kissinger and Secret Service guards. This photo coincided with an AP story on Secret Service wearing sun glasses to hide their glances. All three ordered a print. I read years latter that Kissinger was accused of requesting

Secret Service protection for the prestige.

They are watching a basketball game in the old Xavier University court. The long time AP photographer said you needed a rosary and a candle because of the poor lighting.

Eisenhower Funeral Train

We journalists waited for the funeral train at a station in Kentucky. We almost missed it because there were no funeral decorations. The train had traveled from Washington DC in the dark, without decoration. We all rushed to the underground of the Cincinnati Union Station where they added funeral bunting. The underground lighting and dark clothes matched the mood.

Demonstration

They were demonstrating during the Viet Nam War. One college kid demonstrator politely said to me, “You are out here (middle of a downtown street) just to see us get arrested.” I was surprised by his accusation because I took no delight from the situation. I should have responded, “I’ve been here for ten years, and will be here ten years from now. You just got here.”
