I volunteered to photograph the most difficult subject, a swimming meet. (Swimmers are wet, slimy, under water most of the time, hard to focus on, etc.) Fortunately, the meet was televised, so I had better lighting.

Paul Brown practically invented modern professional football. He's leaving the field after a long career, and a Bengals loss to Pittsburgh. The body language says "retiring" but this could not be stated in words. Two weeks later, he announced his retirement and, the picture ran again.

Gymnast

I decided I wanted to photograph gymnastic practice so I could get close. The University of Cincinnati gymnastic coach told me the team had been eliminated in an economy move. He happened to mention one gymnast who didn't get a scolarship to another school the first year. This gymnast was practicing alone every day during his lunch hour. Made a nice series.

He was moving so fast he couldn't stop in the end zone, jumped over the band. I gave him a print years later and, he remembered the play precisely, the score, the tackler he eluded, etc.
